What a hilarious gem! Thanks to the NYTimes‘ digital archive, I found this 1885 article, whilst trawling the net for piano practice rooms.

In the city of Berlin there are, it is estimated, 217,430 persons who daily practice piano playing. Most of them begin at 8 o’clock A.M. and practice until 12, and perhaps three-fourths of them also practice from 8 o’clock P.M. until 10. …
