The new Synagogue

Did you know that the so-called ‘new synagogue’ in Berlin is actually the city’s oldest synagogue? It turns out that it was built in the mid-19th century after the old one had become too small for the congregation. (does the Jewish community call itself a congregation? No idea, I’m afraid my knowledge of religious matters of any denomination and creed is very limited indeed). There are many fascinating facts about the synagogue, but you had better go and visit it. It is one of those places the require a physical visit. The exhibit is small but equally fascinating to historians who study Jewish history, visitors of Jewish origins, Germans interested in Berlin’s history, and people like me who know very little a all about Jewish history and culture.
