In November and early December Berlin hosted a French film festival. Unfortunately, the only film I had time to see was ‘Populaire’, in French with German subtitles. I think I understood about 50% of the French and 80% of the German… It was a fun and well shot Cinderella-type film about a girl from a small French village who came to Paris to become une secretaire and ended up winning a Championat Dactilografique and le coeur du chef. All built around a very cheesy and traditional love story. Had I not studied so much sociology, the gender stereotyping would probably have made me less angry, and I would have enjoyed it even more. But my best achievement was the lack of linguistic headache afterwards (see my older posts about the confusion of French and German in my head). I also used some of the words I learnt from the film in my second French class. Französische Filme for the win!
