A friend called me this evening and instead of saying hello, asked: ‘is there still water in your fish bowl?’ I couldn’t recognise his voice and stood silent for a moment, listening to the last drops of water leaving my Berlin fish bowl, until he said who he was. He is also one of us, the ones who are leaving. The loose group is now split in two: those leaving and those staying. It is a sad and electric time in which we -from both groups – have made surprising and now seemingly inevitable friendships and connections. Like a brain being ‘rewired’ under extreme circumstances, our lives and friendship circles are being redefined by these last weeks in Berlin. Strange and beautiful times – which I wouldn’t change for anything in the world.
